A Walt Disney World employee was killed when two monorail trains collided
early Sunday morning.

The trains were transporting guests leaving the theme park after a Fourth
of July fireworks show when the accident occurred around 2 a.m., according
to Bo Jones, deputy chief for Reedy Creek Fire Department.  The operator
of one of the trains, identified as Austin Wuennenberg, 21, was killed;
the driver of the second train was taken to the hospital. Witnesses said
Wuennenberg had to be cut out of the train. Five park guests who were on
one the trains were treated for minor injuries. The cause of the crash,
which happened near the ticket and transportation center, is under
investigation.

A witness painted a hectic picture of the deadly collision of two monorail
trains at the Walt Disney World resort early Sunday morning.

The crash that killed 21-year-old monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg "was
the most horrific thing I have ever personally experienced," said Gary
Vinson, Jr., who was standing in line waiting for a tram when the accident
occurred.

"You could tell from the sound it was going faster than normal, then came
the impact which sounded just like a terrible automobile accident," said
Vinson, in an email. "I could see a passenger banging on the window....All
of the bystanders kept yelling, 'Don't jump' and 'Stay in the train.' Then
the train backed up toward the bay, tearing off more pieces that were
protruding."

Walt Disney World spokesman Mike Griffin said the crash happened at about
2 a.m. Sunday at the Transportation and Ticket Center, on one of the
monorail's last runs of the day.

Walt Disney World officials said they are working with law enforcement
officials to find out what happened.

Wuennenberg, a Kissimmee resident who was piloting the one of the monorail
trains, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the Orange
County Sheriff's Office said.

Wuennenberg, who attended Celebration High School, was studying computer
science at Stetson University, according to a profile on the social
networking site Facebook.com. He began working as a monorail pilot at Walt
Disney World in October, according to the profile.

"News media are currently offering conflicting reports of where the crash
took place, with many news outlets reporting that the collision took place
at the Epcot monorail station, while others report that the crash occurred
at the Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center. An amateur video
taken moments after the monorails collided confirms that the accident took
place on the Epcot track inside the Transportation and Ticket Center,
which is located near the parking lot of the Magic Kingdom. The video
shows the two monorail trains locked together at the Magic Kingdom's
Transportation and Ticket Center. The amateur videographer follows park
guests exiting monorail purple and helping a Disney cast member check on
the driver, who reportedly died on the scene.

This tragic accident was entirely preventable. Disney's monorails operate
on two separate tracks on two loop systems."

<snip>

"Monorail trains normally travel along their respective tracks, with each
monorail traveling in the same direction on the track. This way, it is
impossible for monorails to crash into each other head-on. Disney uses a
sophisticated safety system designed to prevent monorails from crashing
into the rear of another monorail train. Monorails test this system
regularly while carrying passengers, who are advised that the monorail's
computer system automatically shuts down once the monorail comes within a
certain distance of another monorail train. It is not clear how this
system failed early Sunday morning,....."
