Going South on Kensington Avenue to Front Street, one is under the
Frankford Elevated Tracks.  The El also turns onto Front.  South and East
of Front and Kensington one soon sees substantial gentrification and by
two elevated stops South on Front, one is entering center city Philadelphia.
The first el stop is a short ride west to the Temple University main
campus and at Allegheny and Kensington Avenues in the heart of Kensington,
one is a short ride west on the SEPTA route 60 but to the Temple
University Medical School and Health Science campus.

This week there was an interesting article about a cultural development
in Kensington and some time earlier one about a cultural institution in
that area.

UNITED STATES: CITIES: PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA:

A Play Wont Save Kensington, But This One Has the Ideas That Might

A play cant save Kensington, of course. But the ideas at the heart of this
production might. This isnt some drama-school exercise, but a small front
in the bigger fight against the stigma that blankets Kensington, Durkin
said. It gives people struggling there the opportunity to tell  even craft
their stories. And it invites the neighbors who have lived here through
decades of neglect and abandonment  and who again bear the brunt of a
citywide crisis  to stand up and against a narrative that reduces them to
players in a Hellscape.

And thats a needed platform, no matter how small. If the crisis in
Kensington is to be stemmed, the people on The Avenue and the people who
have been ignored here for years have to be at the forefront of the
conversation. Durkins play models the kind of dialogue thats needed.

*

Every week, the drama is worked out around a table in the storefront on
The Avenue. With his fliers, Durkin invites people in to tell their
stories.

In addtion to the play about oppoid and other drug addiction, the
Kensington branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia serves locals and
medical tourists for drug and oppoid addiction according to another
earlier Philadelphia Inquirer article.

DRUG ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE: ADDICTION :

LIBRARY: LIBRARIANS :

UNITED STATES: CITIES: PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA:

For These Philly Librarians,
Drug Tourists and Overdose Drills are Part of the Job

As the library overdoses mounted, the soft-spoken Moore, whom the kids
call Miss Judi, took actions, small and large.

.

First, she posted a bathroom monitor  and accompanying rules she hoped
would pose obstacles to those whod use the bathroom to get high:

.

Adults must leave a library card or ID at the front desk, the sign reads.
And bathroom use is limited to three to five minutes. After that, a guard
knocks.

.

While other libraries practice fire drills, McPherson began overdose
drills:

.

Who stays with the victim? Who calls 911? Who ushers out the kids? Who
waits for an ambulance?

.

The steps helped, but then the tourists swarmed.

.

White kids, mostly. And the addresses listed on the drivers licenses offer
evidence of the opioid crisis reach: Jersey. Delaware. Ohio. South
Carolina. Alabama. Arkansas. Nevada.

.

With its after-school lunches and arts and STEM programming, the library
has long sought to be a safe learning space. McPherson  set to celebrate
its 100th anniversary Saturday  has the highest programming-attendance
rate of any city branch. And is also among the top for WiFi use. Kids come
here to use computers they dont have at home.

.

And the park had been getting nicer in recent years, with a new playground
and lighting.

.

But now, more than ever, children must watch their steps for needles.

The publication citations below lead to sources that explore the
relationships of tourism to drugs and drug addiction and perhaps the arts
provide one avenue to explore these relationships.  Nevertheless, the
problem of drug addiction in tourism is huge as this link and the
citations below illustrate.
